Being threatened with homelessness, and becoming homeless can be incredibly scary.
With homelessness rising every year mainly due to economic reasons, it is vital that our Campaign followers know what do to if they or someone they know is ever faced with the situation of having to leave their home. Reasons for eviction could be non-payment of rent, fire, domestic violence, flood, overcrowding, loss of income or relationship breakdown.
It is really vital to know who to call if ever faced in this situation. BY LAW, your Council or Local Authority must have an emergency homeless service running all day and night, all through the year:
- During office hours, you should call your usual Council switchboard, unless you know the direct line to the Homeless Team.
- Outside office hours and at weekends/Bank Holiday’s, the number might not be the same. Hugo’s Earthquake has compiled a list of every Local Authority out of hours number in England and Wales: YOUR OUT OF HOURS LOCAL AUTHORITY NUMBER FOR HOMELESSNESS/ADVICE (ENGLAND AND WALES ONLY).
- IF YOU ARE HOMELESS IN SCOTLAND, you can find your Local Authority number here: Shelter Scotland Local Authority Directory.

MYTH-BUSTER: When someone calls up the Council, they might assume they will be given somewhere to stay that night. This is often not the case. FIND OUT MORE: What you might not know when you ‘apply to be homeless’ at the Council.
